Grade 5 Program

About

Grade 5 is a special year as it is the last year the student will have a contained classroom. This grade 5 class will focus on utilizing and enjoying this dynamic to fully integrate our learning. Oral and written communication will be a focus in every subject we study. It is only through effective communication that our ideas can be shared. Time each day will be dedicated to the pursuit of mathematical thought, the arts of using the English language to read, write and appreciate literature and time for project integration where we will use a project based learning approach to study and interact with the world around us through social science, natural science.

Children’s Social and Emotional Development

Great care is given to facilitate students’ social and emotional development. The class will have frequent class meetings where skills such as empathy, collaborative problem-solving and cooperation will be taught and practised. The classroom will be structured in such a way that promotes mutual respect and ensures each child feels a sense of belonging and significance.

Learning in Language Arts

The literacy curriculum in upper elementary is tailored to meet the needs of the students. We will be using novel studies for individualized and small-group instruction, as well as whole-group units. We will teach and use the 6+1 Traits of writing workshop format
Our units of study include : Reading, Realistic, Science Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Writing, Informational Writing, Narratives, Persuasive Arguments, Poetry

Learning in Mathematics

In math, we will use a variety of resources tailored to meet student needs, all of which are aligned to both Common Core and Aero Standard. We use the NAMC, a highly effective program designed to build students’ confidence and love of math. It is rigorous, personalized and engaging. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of tools and strategies and to show their thinking in many ways.
Our units of study include: Place Value and base-ten concepts, All operations (addition, Subtraction, multiplication and division), Fraction concepts and operations, Decimals and Percentages, Algebraic Thinking, Data Analysis, Measurement, Geometry

Mathematics

Sixth-grade math provides students with a strong foundation of key mathematical concepts and skills.
Topics covered: Application with fractions and decimals, Integers, One-step equations and inequalities, Ratios, proportions, and per cent, Measurement, Geometry concepts, Problem-solving

Learning in Social Studies and Science through project integration

The Science and Social curriculum is project-based. Students will investigate the world through purposeful research and group collaboration.
Our units of study include: Climate Change, Right and Responsibilities in Our World, Cells and Organ System, Conflict and Cooperation
