Grade 2 Program

About

Second graders will explore many exciting units and grow as readers, writers and mathematicians. We will work together to foster personal responsibility, independence and academic growth in a supportive and caring classroom environment. In terms of instruction, grade 2student will be engaged in whole class lessons of inquiry. Concepts will be introduced and students will be encouraged to make personal connections to our topics. Curiosity will be stimulated by thoughtful questioning, discussions and research. Students will receive guided instruction, modelling techniques, skill practice and strategies that are based on the NAMC curriculum we support all students.

Homework will be reading, math, and project for our social studies and science units throughout the year.

Children’s Social and Emotional Development

Children at this age a lot of time making friends, maintaining friendships and learning critical social skills’ We be using Kelso’s choices as a decision–making program that enables children to make personal choices that help strengthen their social skills. In addition to learning a variety of useful social interaction strategies and techniques, students will also participate in team-building lessons that support our classroom and school communities.

Mathematics

Learning in Mathematics, North America Montessori consists of a strong foundation for kids to understand the abstract in Mathematics. Mathematics concepts are reinforced with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and making authentic connections to the real world. Units of study in Mathematics include: Number Sense and Facts Number Lines, Algebraic Thinking: Unknowns in addition and Subtraction, Story Problem(one-step and two-step problem), Place Value, Patterns, Weight and Measurement, Time, Money, Geometry, Data: Analyzing graphs

Learning in Language Arts

In Grade 2 Language Arts, children are solidifying their earlier reading and writing skills, in addition to developing their comprehension and critical thinking skills. Students will be exposed to higher-level vocabulary. Literature Circle Discussions. Book Projects and Arthur Projects will be included to reinforce comprehension skills and instil personal reading motivation. Students will receive a word list every week. The goal is to increase fluency when exposed to these high-frequency words.

Learning in Social Studies

Grade 2 Social Studies consists of learning about social groups and how we fit into them. It also includes a study of similarities and differences in our global communities. Our units of study include: My Family, Families Around the World, Geography and Map Skills, Inventors and Inventions.

Learning in Science

Grade 2 Science consists of exploring our world, with hands-on experiments, observations and exploration! Our units of study include: The Solar System, Weather, Invertebrate Animals, Human Body
